These lyrics represent the current economic climate and the coalition governments recent nationwide cut backs. The government made up of the conservative party and the liberal democrats both came together to form a coalition government and have recently been trying to save money by cutting expenses in the public sector and also by raising prices on other areas this has possibly hit students and young people the hardest as they are trying to raise tuition fee’s to an extortionate price. The tuition fee price rise has caused huge riots and a massive uprising of students and young people collaborating as one voice trying to be heard and rebel against these rises. In most recent news a huge protest took place at Milbank (the conservative parties head quarters) the protest turned into a violent storming of the building where the angered students kicked through the windows and started a huge bonfire. These acts of rebellion are a clear link to the ska music genre loosely however they are more linked to punk. Yet ska music videos often feature economic images of hardship, this recent protest symbolises our song very clearly.
Well done for linking the genre to protest, with great image of Cameron and Clegg (money grappers?) and the protest. You need to explain how these images and the student movement relates to Ska. You could link your points to the title seequence of "This is England" where Shane Meadows links the condition of England to the British establishment, i.e. Thatcher/the Conservative Party, the army (war in Falklands which is negative represented), the Royal Family and the condition of the disenfranchised working class.
ReplyDeleteThe student movement reflects student the anger at what they perceive as the Lib Dem betrayal and their cosying up with the Tories; the skinhead gangs as represented in "This is England" also represent a rebellion against an establishment which has trodden on the working class etc etc. Read up on this.
